Bosch 0442201002 "Short" Fuel Pump Restoration

$895.00

This listing is for a restoration service. This is not an exchange program.

After placing your order you will need to send your pump to us. Pumps sent in for restoration must be complete, assembled and unmodified.

When we receive your fuel pump it is disassembled and inspected to ensure that it can be rebuilt. All of the separate parts are cleaned in an ultrasonic bath to remove road grime, fuel residue and varnish, and then the aluminum housing parts are vapor honed. After vapor honing they get another wash in the ultrasonic bath to ensure that they are perfectly clean.

The vapor honing process thoroughly cleans and polishes the aluminum parts, leaving them considerably more resistant to corrosion and staining. Unlike some rebuilders we do not use dry bead blasting or paint on aluminum. Both methods are decent in the short term but neither finish can match the appearance or longevity that vapor honing offers. The steel portion of the body is stripped and painted with a catalyzed satin black epoxy that is virtually impervious to gasoline and very difficult to scratch. Your inlet and outlet fittings, if provided with the pump, are also cleaned up and reinstalled.

After the housing is prepared the armature is cleaned and turned and the brushes are replaced to restore functionality. The pump is then assembled with modern ethanol resistant o-rings and seals, and new zinc plated* nuts, bolts and washers. The combination of vapor honed aluminum, epoxy paint and plated hardware offers superior resistance to the harsh conditions that these pumps are exposed to underneath your car.

Once assembled the pump is tested to ensure correct fuel flow and power consumption. Finally, it is labelled with a unique serial number, packaged and shipped back to you. Before installing your rebuilt fuel pump we strongly recommend replacing the fuel tank strainer as well as installing an inline fuel filter between the tank and the pump.

Restored pumps are covered by a one year warranty when they are installed with a new fuel tank strainer and in-line fuel filter.

If a pump is returned for warranty repair and debris or blockage is found inside, repair work will only be carried out at the customers expense. Damage caused by mishandling, incorrect installation or use in non-original applications is not covered. Pumps must have serial number label and undisturbed paint marks intact for warranty claims to be considered.

*Why do we use zinc plated hardware instead of stainless? Isn’t stainless better?

For some applications stainless is great but it’s not always ideal. Galvanic corrosion between stainless hardware and aluminum parts is a real problem that can not only result in hardware that is nearly impossible to remove, but the stainless can actually leach material from the aluminum, leaving behind structurally weakened threads. Zinc plated mild steel does not do this and that’s why we prefer it. A little anti-seize helps ensure that everything will come apart years from now if the pump ever needs to be rebuilt again.

What if my pump is really crusty?

Most pumps can be rebuilt without needing major components replaced. Badly corroded motor housings or aluminum parts can be reused as long as they don’t leak. In some cases the armature, impeller, positive and negative terminals and fuel fittings are not reusable. These parts are generally available new or used at an added cost. In these cases we will contact you to discuss what is required to get your pump back into shape. If you have a really ugly pump and would prefer to have a nicer one we may be able to accommodate, depending on what we have in stock. If a pump is not salvageable it will be returned and a refund will be given for the full amount less the cost of the return postage.

How do I send my pump in?

After you place your order we will send you a message with shipping information. Please prepare your fuel pump by ensuring it is drained of all fuel and sealed in a freezer bag or similar. Pack it carefully because we can’t rebuild it if it breaks out of the box on the way here. On that note, we also suggest insuring the package for at least $500 with whichever carrier you choose to send it with, since replacement pumps are not cheap. Restored pumps are insured for $1000 when they are shipped back to you.
